haven 復習

教育実習3日目にして、全校生徒の前で挨拶をしました。緊張はしましたが、ゼミの活動やUG先生の講演会等に連れていただいて人前で話していたおかげで足が竦むことなく堂々と行えました。気が付かないうちに、このような状況に対する耐性が少しでもついていたことに驚くばかりです。UG先生、ありがとうございます。

今回取り上げる記事は、その美しさに観光客を惹きつけてやまない火山についてです。ここでは日本の象徴、富士山について書かれている部分を抜粋します。

Perhaps the world’s most famous symmetrical stratovolcano is Japan’s Mount Fuji, which has served as the muse for many artistic creations through the centuries. “[It’s] the national symbol of Japan: snow-capped, looming in the distance, cherry blossoms in the forefront,” Vaché said. Not only is the mountain itself beautiful and mysterious, but the Aokigahara forest on the northwest base of the mountain also inspires the imagination, as many local folktales describe the demons and goblins that haunt within. At least the mountain itself remains a safe haven – the low risk active volcano hasn’t erupted since 1707.

気になった表現は “haven”です。G4（大修館）で確認しますと「“harbor”よりも堅い表現として使われる(避難)港、停泊所、[…からの/…にとっての]避難所、安息地」という意味がありました。LODCEでは “a place where people or animals can live peacefully or go to in order to be safe”と書かれていました。火山活動が停止している状態は人間、動物たちが安全に過ごせるということが強く表れている表現であるように考えられます。（Inaho）
