Nishikori reaches new milestone at French Open
Kei Nishikori reached another milestone on Sunday, becoming the first Japanese man in more than 80 years to advance to the quarterfinals at the French Open.
“To (reach) the quarterfinals, that’s the first goal for these two weeks,” said Nishikori, who disappointed with a first-round exit at the French last year but rebounded by making the U.S. Open final. “I knew I could do this because I was doing well during the clay-court season. I hope it’s just the start of my journey, and I hope I can keep going.”

今回取り上げるのは、“reach a milestone”という表現です。LDOCEで調べてみると、“a very important event in the development of something”という定義が見つかりました。さらに『ジーニアス英和辞典G4 大修館書店』では、「〔人生・歴史での〕画期的事件〔出来事〕」、「〔進行・議論などの〕重要な段階」といった意味が載っていました。
錦織選手自身からしてみても「全仏オープンで人生初であり、また約80年以来で日本人初のベスト8」ということで、今回は“reach new milestone”となっていると思われます。また、訳としては「錦織選手が全仏オープンにおいて、新たな金字塔を打ち立てた」となるでしょうか。(ninetails)
