fair governance

(Kawada)

Ministers: Japan won't join AIIB for now

Finance Minister Taro Aso has reiterated that Japan will not join the China-proposed Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, or AIIB, for the time being.

Aso told reporters on Tuesday morning that participating in the proposed bank is conditional on fair governance. He cited the need for having a board of directors from member nations that properly assesses specific projects and considers their impact on the environment and relevant societies before approving them.

Aso said Japan cannot but be careful about joining the bank until such points are addressed. His remarks are taken to indicate that Japan believes China has failed so far to fully clarify these issues.

Economic and Fiscal Policy Minister Akira Amari also said Japan will not be joining for the time being.
