Spin: Tommy John surgery is being discussed, with an MRI showing damage to the UCL in Darvish's throwing elbow. It appears to be a crushing blow to a Rangers team that dealt with countless injuries last year, but until the club receives additional consultation, there will not be an official decision regarding surgery. Darvish left Thursday's spring game with what was first labeled right triceps tightness.
ESPN Fantasy Projection: A sprained UCL threatens Darvish's season, but he has not yet been ruled out and thus represents an interesting risk/reward play for 2015, but do not take the threat of injury lightly; his 2014 was derailed by two trips to the DL with elbow inflammation that limited him to just 22 starts. When he was on the mound in 2014, Darvish posted a much higher WHIP than normal thanks to a .348 BABIP, though it doesn't appear that's a function of his stuff degrading. His strikeout rate remained high, but his walk rate actually declined, as did his home run rate. Darvish's fastball slowed down, but only by a small amount (from 92.9 mph to 92.4 mph), so if he does make most of his starts, he could perform as a top pitcher, but that is a big if at this time.
