Good morning on this chilly Thursday.
Around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, a side door in a courtroom in Brooklyn opened, and two very young-looking men were led in.
“They just looked like young guys you’d see in the neighborhood,” said Stephanie Clifford, The Times’s Brooklyn courts reporter.
One of the men wore a green hoodie and hightops and worked at a mall kiosk. The other, in a gray hoodie and jeans, worked in a sandwich shop.
But Abdurasul Juraboev, 24, and Akhror Saidakhmetov, 19, were there to be arraigned on charges of plotting to go to Syria and join the terrorists of the Islamic State. (A third man was arrested in Florida.)
The men, also accused of threatening to bomb Coney Island, had taken little action on their plans, officials said, describing their ambitions as “aspirational.”
Still, they were the first New Yorkers publicly linked to recruiting efforts by ISIS.
The pair’s moment before a federal magistrate, in a brightly lit arraignment room packed with reporters, was brief.
The judge confirmed that their incomes were low enough to qualify for court-appointed lawyers.
Then she asked the men if they understood the proceedings and the charges.
Both replied “yes” in accented English. (Mr. Juraboev is from Uzbekistan, and Mr. Saidakhmetov from Kazakhstan, though both are legal permanent American residents who live in Midwood, Brooklyn.)
Ms. Clifford said that the men, who were held without bail, did not display an ounce of menace or swagger.
“They didn’t make any threatening gestures,” she said.
“When the younger guy walked in, he just looked at the room and looked a little startled to see all the people there. Then he quickly turned to face the judge.”
