Table Tennis: Japan pulls out of Kuwait, Qatar Opens after hostage killings
The Japan Table Tennis Association announced Thursday it will not send a team to either the Kuwait Open or the Qatar Open later this month after two Japanese hostages were killed by Islamic State.
The JTTA was planning to dispatch 33 players for the Kuwait and Qatar opens starting Wednesday and on Feb. 17, respectively, but pulled the plug after it was warned about traveling in the Middle East by the Japanese government in light of the killings.
The JTTA relayed its decision to the organizers of the two competitions on Thursday.

今回取り上げるのは、”pull the plug”という表現です。直訳すると、「プラグを抜く」となりますが、「（計画されていたこと）を急にやめる、打ち切りにする」（『ジーニアス英和辞典 第4版、大修館書店』）という意味になります。電化製品の「プラグを抜く」と急に動かなくなるというのが由来のようです。 今回は、「選手たちの中東派遣を中止する」という意味でこの表現が使われていました。(ninetails)
