既に数日前のニュースですが、NFLのシーホークスがスーパーボウル進出を決めました。今回は、そのシーホークスに負けたパッカーズの敗因は何だったのかについてまとめた記事から表現を取り上げます。

今回はconk offに注目します。conkを引いてみると、「（俗）＜人《の頭》＞を強くなぐる」（『ウィズダム英和辞典　第二版』三省堂）という意味が記載されています。また、英英辞典でも調べてみると”to hit especially on the head”（Merriam-Webster Online）と定義されています。

記事に埋め込まれている動画を確認してみると、たしかにボールが選手の頭に当たっていますが、ただ単に当たるではなく，ボールが大きく跳ねています。この大きく跳ねる感覚がconkの後に続くoffに含まれていると思いました。そこから、ここでのconk offは「（頭に当たって）跳ね返る」あたりの意味になるでしょうか。（Astroriver）
