“幽霊兵士”なるものをご存知でしょうか。この“幽霊兵士”がイラクでは深刻な問題となっているようです。簡単に説明すると、任務につかずに給料をもらっている兵士たちのことです。詳しくはこちら（http://matome.naver.jp/odai/2141854160837452401）
年間に430億円も支払われており、その５万人の中には架空名義で登録された兵士や離脱・死亡した兵士も含まれています。さらには、その給料を着服する上官も存在するそうです。イラクの軍隊には８万の兵士がいるそうなので、まともな任務を全うしているのは半分にも満たない３万人という計算になります。
BAGHDAD (AP) — The Iraqi government has identified and stopped payment of tens of millions of dollars in salaries previously disbursed to nonexistent troops, known here as "ghost soldiers," as part of the prime minister's vow to tackle corruption in the military and regain a foothold in the battle against the Islamic State group, two senior government officials said.
The initiative is part of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s plan to rebuild the U.S.-trained military which crumbled in the face of last summer’s onslaught by Islamic State militants.
Al-Abadi recently purged the military and interior ministry from a number of senior officials who were appointees of his predecessor, Nouri al-Maliki. While it is unclear whether any of the sacked officials are among those accused of collecting misappropriated funds, al-Abadi vowed to pursue the sensitive matter “even if it costs me my life.”<後略>

“幽霊兵士”は記事から見て取れるように、“ghost soldiers”と呼称されています。
今回は、“soldier”に焦点を当ててみたいと思います。今回とりあげた“ghost soldiers”につながるように感じたのですが、動詞として「soldier：（仕事をしているふりをして）サボる、仮病を使う」という私がイメージするsoldierらしからぬ意味がありました。『Wisdom英和辞典第三版』（三省堂）
