The administration of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe tried to smartly and promptly handle the resignation of two female ministers — a serious situation that reminds people of “the resignation domino effect” that battered the 2006-07 first Abe Cabinet. However, Abe’s second Cabinet has certainly suffered a great blow by losing the two female ministers, who were symbols of “a society in which women can take more active roles,” one of the pillars of the administration’s policy.

“I will provide full backup. So I want you to implement a thorough investigation.”

Abe reportedly told former Economic, Trade and Industry Minister Yuko Obuchi this when she expressed her intention to resign at the Prime Minister’s Office on Monday morning.

About five hours later, Abe told former Justice Minister Midori Matsushima in the same room, “I hope you will have an entirely fresh start and utilize your abilities on a new note.”

Appointing five women in the Cabinet reshuffle in September, Abe managed to increase approval ratings. However, great pitfalls awaited him.

LDOCE5を見てみると、堅い表現で、“to wait for something – used about something that you know will happen or arrive”とありました。 (Kawada)
