Apple Posts $7.7 Billion in Profit on Strong iPhone Sales
For Apple, the iPhone continues to be the gadget that makes the company tick. Sales for the handset grew even in a time of year when smartphone sales are expected slow.
Apple, based in Cupertino, Calif., reported on Tuesday a profit of $7.7 billion, up from $6.9 billion in the same quarter a year earlier. The company also reported revenue of $37.4 billion, up from $35.3 billion compared to the quarter a year ago. Strong sales of iPhones and Macs fueled the growth, the company said.
“We are incredibly excited about the upcoming releases of iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, as well as other new products and services that we can’t wait to introduce,” said Timothy D. Cook, Apple’s chief executive, in a statement.
tickを「時計などがカチカチいう、メーターなどがカチャッという」という意味で理解していましたが、この記事では"カチカチ"とは関係ありまりません。
「カチカチ」という擬態音から「何かが動く」という意味かな、もしくはチェックマークから「チェックする」（英国用法）なのかなと類推してみましたが、自信がありません。その後、いくつか辞書を引いてみましたが、それらしい意味はなく、仕方なく先生を煩わせてしまいました。
すると、tickは株式市場の値動きから用いられるようになった動詞用法で「株価が上がる、上向きに推移する」という意味で、そこから「好調である」という意味で、主に経済（とくに証券業界）で使われるようになったと教えていただきました。英語を理解するにはスキーマが大切だということが身に染みた事例となりました。（inaho）
