Systems engineer sold Benesse customer data for several million yen: sources

A systems engineer for a contractor that provided database management services for Benesse Holdings Inc. routinely misappropriated Benesse's customer data, and made several million yen selling the information, investigative sources have disclosed.

During a voluntary questioning session by investigators, the systems engineer was quoted as saying, "Between the end of last year and June this year (before the case came to light) I repeatedly took out the customer data. I sold the information to a dealer in name lists for several million yen in total."

The systems engineer has voluntarily submitted data storage devices to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). It has emerged that they contained massive amounts of personal data matching that in Benesse's database.
