crunch time
おはようございます。NY州では学年末試験が終わり長い夏休みに入りました。でも高校３年生だけは別。州の標準テストのためのcrunch timeがはじまっています。

The sun is out. Finals are done. Students don’t want to show up for class, much less do work.
But for those in high school like Milana Aranova, this week is crunch time:
The Regents exams start on Tuesday.
Most public school students in the city have to pass five core Regents tests to graduate. That’s been the rule since 2012.
crunch timeは「歯をくいしばってふんばる期間」という意味で「正念場，ふんばりどき」という意味です。スポーツでもしばしば見かける表現です。crunchはもともと，「（特に堅いもの）を砕く，バリバリと砕いて食べる」という意味ですが，「歯をくいしばって力を入れる」ところからこのような意味に発展したものです。わたしも今週も学内の仕事に加えて，原稿書き，講演が続きます。夏休みへ向けてcrunch timeが続きます。（UG）
