Everyone knows violent crime goes up in the summer.
Temperatures rise, tempers flare.
But it’s also high season for several seemingly innocuous activities that could earn you a summons:
• Drinking alcohol in public — in parks, on stoops, on the street. Including in your car.
• Public urination. The law prohibits spilling “blood, swill, brine, offensive animal matter, noxious liquid, dead animals, offal, putrid or stinking vegetable or animal matter or other filthy matter” in public areas.
• Unreasonable noise. Turn down the funk after 10 p.m.
• Riding a bike against traffic. Just ask Alec Baldwin.
• Being in a park after hours. Romantic, yes; a crime, also.
• Barbecuing on your terrace. Depends on the size. All grilling must be done 10 feet or more away from any combustible surface. (So no fire escapes.)
• Stretching out on the subway after a long day at the beach, or a long night out.
Most of these violations will be met with a ticket, but if you have an outstanding warrant (for, say, forgetting about the last summons), you could spend a hot summer’s night in Central Booking.
