STAP cell research to fall apart as authors consent to retraction

Riken is now conducting tests to verify whether the "stimulus-triggered acquisition of pluripotency" cells can be produced.

Obokata signed a document agreeing to withdraw the research paper and delivered copies to co-authors of the paper Tuesday, Riken said. She earlier agreed to withdraw the auxiliary paper.

Obokata reluctantly accepted the retraction in order to participate in Riken's verification tests, her lawyer Hideo Miki said.

Miki also said he regrets that he could not protect Obokata, who "had no choice but to agree" to the retraction after she came under pressure.

According to the lawyer, Obokata was advised by Vacanti that starting all over with a clean slate could be one way to settle the issue. Vacanti supervised Obokata when she studied at the university in the late 2000s.
