ASDF flyby, ‘dream soccer game’ mark end of National Stadium

The National Stadium in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo, closed its 56-year history on Saturday with a spectacular ceremony attended by a capacity crowd of more than 50,000 people bidding farewell to the venue.

Demolition work on the stadium is scheduled to begin in July to make way for a new venue set for completion in 2019 that will stage the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

The event included a “dream soccer match” held from 4 p.m. featuring former members of the Japan national team, including Masashi Nakayama, 46, and Ramos Ruy, 57. Spectators roared with excitement as they watched the plays made by the one-time soccer stars.

Blue Impulse, the Air Self-Defense Force’s aerobatic flight team, also demonstrated impressive aerobatic maneuvers. At the 1964 Tokyo Games, they turned heads in a similar fashion when they painted the Olympic rings across the skies with their jet trails at the opening ceremony.
