「計画停電」ということばが久しぶりに出てきました。この夏の電力需要は気になるところです。でも「電力不足」が原発再始動のプロパガンダに利用され，丸め込まれるのもいやです。注視しておきたいものです。

walk a tightropeは文字通り「綱渡りをする、危ない橋を渡る」という意味で，おそらくはthe greatest show on Earth（＝circus）から一般に用いられるようになったフレーズでしょう（誰か調べて！）。英英には"to walk on a tightly stretched wire that is high off the ground"とあります。
この表現が國弘正雄先生のレクチャーで出てきたことを妙に覚えています。いつ，どこであったレクチャーだったのかは記憶にありませんが，タイトルは:
"The Intermestic Age"（international とdomesticを合わせた造語）
だったと思います。
新しい相互依存の国際社会が到来したことを語られたくだりで，先生が当時の日本の経済状況を形容されたときだったと思います。サーカスの綱渡りよろしく，身振り手振りを交えてで，Japan has been walking on a tightrope...とおっしゃったことを記憶しています。
当時は，生意気にも「あれっ，onは要らないのでは？」などと思ったので記憶に残った次第です。今考えると，このフレーズが使われはじめたときにはonは存在し，その後，アメリカ語らしく（？）やがてとれたのではないかと推測しております。
たいしたことではないのですが，妙に記憶に残っているエピソードのご紹介でした。（UG）
