アメリカ政府がマイクロソフトに対して，アメリカ国外に保管しているデータに対しても政府に対して情報を公開するように判決を下しました。従来，マイクロソフトは利用者のメールの情報をイスラエルにあるサーバーに保管することで情報を保護しておりました。しかし，この裁判により保管場所を問わずあらゆる情報を政府に対して公開することになります。この記事の中で気になった単語は"subpoena"です。『Wisdom第三版（三省堂）』によると，「(証人への)召喚状, (法廷への)出頭命令」などという意味がありました。
"summon"との違いが気になったので，"wise GEEK"というサイトで調べると，
A summons is generally used to inform someone that they are actually a party to a lawsuit, usually as a defendant. In most cases this means that the person is being sued, and the document will both inform them of the action and put them on notice that they need to prepare a defense. A subpoena, on the other hand, is typically used to call witnesses to court.
と書かれております。"summon"は「容疑者」を招集するのに対して，"subpoena"は「目撃者」などの情報提供者を招集するという違いであると思います。エドワードスノーデンのリークにより，米国政府が個人情報を監視していたことが明らかになりましたが，今回も堂々と個人情報の提供を要求しておりますね。（Ume）
Judge James Francis in New York said that this was true for "traditional" warrants but not for those seeking online content, which are governed by federal law under the Stored Communications Act.
He said the warrant should be treated more like a subpoena for documents. Anyone issued with a subpoena by the US must provide the information sought, no matter where it was held, he said.
Law enforcement efforts would be seriously impeded and the burden on the government would be substantial if they had to co-ordinate with foreign governments to obtain this sort of information from internet service providers such as Microsoft and Google, Judge Francis said.
