Britain to stop using TOEIC, TOEFL tests for visa applications

Japanese planning to study in Britain may have to think again after the Home Office in London said it will no longer accept two internationally administered tests of English language ability in visa applications.

Britain plans to stop accepting TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) from April after a BBC program uncovered cheating on one of those tests in Britain.

The Japanese organization that administers TOEIC plans to reimburse test fees to individuals who took the test with the objective of going to Britain.

An estimated 2,000 Japanese apply annually for British visas to study at university or graduate school.

The decision could also affect those thinking about going to Britain for work reasons or as an immigrant.
