STAP science anything but settled as researcher rebuffs fraud accusation

TOKYO -- A Japanese scientist accused of faking research on stem cell creation apologized Wednesday for "mistakes" in her reports but insisted her findings are sound. Haruko Obokata's refusal to bow to her critics opens a new chapter in the scandal -- one in which lawyers may get involved.

At a news conference in Osaka, the 30-year-old Obokata said there had been no "malicious intent" behind problems with her papers on a procedure called STAP, or stimulus-triggered acquisition of pluripotency. Obokata and colleagues reported they had made mouse cells pluripotent -- capable of turning into other kinds of cells -- simply by soaking them in a mild acid bath.

This technique, if it works, could be a boon for regenerative medicine. The announcement of the method made Obokata an instant star. But soon doubts emerged over the validity of the research. The data, some said, appeared manipulated. There were reports that other scientists were unable to replicate the results. An investigative panel formed by Obokata's employer, the government-funded Riken research institute, found she had taken an image from a previous report and used it to demonstrate the results of an experiment performed under different conditions.

Though no verdict has been reached as to whether STAP cells are real, Riken concluded that part of Obokata's findings were fraudulent.

Obokata said she resorted to cutting and pasting due to a "lack of studies" and her "own way of doing things." The experiment results, she said, "remain unchanged." As for the fraud accusation, she attributed it to the Riken panel's unfamiliarity with her work.

(GP)
