ANA places bulk plane orders with Boeing, Airbus

The company hopes to lower flight costs by bringing in state-of-the-art aircraft. Its order includes Boeing's next-generation B777-9X, which is larger than the current 777 series but improves on its fuel efficiency by 20% or more. The smaller jets from Airbus will boast a longer flying range than the airline's current planes. About 40 of the new planes will replace aging aircraft.

The soft yen has pushed up the cost of buying fuel in dollars. ANA's fuel costs are expected to climb 20% this fiscal year to around 360 billion yen. Adding all of the new planes to the fleet will shave 10 billion yen a year off this figure, according to the company.

Of the 70 planes ordered, 40 are from Boeing and 30 from Airbus. The two manufacturers competed to sell their respective next-generation large aircraft, but the B777-9X won out.

shave offは,以前,先生の講演に同行させていただいたときにその冒頭のjokeとしてよく使われていました(間違っているかもしれませんが,Thank you very much for giving me a chance to shave a few pounds off me. と自虐的(?)に切り出しておられました。沙翁でしたか?)。

記事の方はちろん,「削減する」ということですが,簡単に「節約する」といってもいいですね。(GP)
