Lead author fabricated parts of high-profile stem cell papers: Riken

The Japanese government-backed Riken institute said Tuesday some portions of purportedly trailblazing stem cell papers were manipulated and fabricated by lead author Haruko Obokata.

Riken's investigative panel concluded at a news conference in Tokyo that key data in the papers were falsified, but declined to say whether the so-called STAP cells -- the versatile stem cells the papers' authors say they created -- really exist or not, calling for further scientific studies.

The research that was initially hailed as groundbreaking with potential in regenerative medicine has turned into a major embarrassment for the country's premier research institute and the Japanese scientific community at large.

Riken is expected to recommend that Obokata, a researcher at the Riken Center for Developmental Biology, and co-authors retract the papers, which appeared in the journal Nature in late January.

Meanwhile, Obokata strongly disputed the panel's conclusion, saying through her lawyer she "can never accept the pigeonholing (of the irregularities) as manipulation and fabrication" and adding that she intends to appeal to Riken over its conclusion.

すでにブログでは取り上げられていますが。文字通り「ハト小屋の出入り穴」を意味するpigeonholeは動詞として用いられる場合には「Aを〔…として〕分類する，決めつけられる 」という意味になります。ここの小保方氏のコメント原文は「改ざん、捏造（ねつぞう）と決めつけられ、とても承服できません。」でした。

同じ意味を表す，classify，categorizeやregardなどよりもこの動詞を使うと「固定観念で決を下す」といったニュアンスが伴います。口語ですが，小保方氏の文意（言い分）をうまく汲んでいる英訳です。

ちなみにわたしの大学に届く郵便などは大学院棟受付そばの「メールボックス」に集められますが，ネイティブとはこの「私書箱」をpigeonboxと呼んでいます。（UG）
