江戸時代の浮世絵師 喜多川歌麿の代表作として知られる「深川の雪」は戦後まもなく行方不明になっていましたが、66年ぶりに発見され、一般公開されることになりました。

"Lost" Utamaro painting rediscovered

A masterpiece by the Japanese ukiyoe artist Kitagawa Utamaro has resurfaced after more than 60 years.

Utamaro is best known for his portraits of beautiful women that were used to make ukiyoe woodblock prints and paintings.

"Snow in Fukagawa" is a painting 2 meters high and 3.5 meters wide. It is believed to date from the early 19th century.

The hanging scroll depicts 27 geisha in vivid colors against the backdrop of a Japanese restaurant.

The work was last seen at an exhibition in Tokyo in 1948.

NHK has learned that a Japanese art dealer has kept the painting for the past 2 years.
The piece was confirmed as a genuine Utamaro work by Shugo Asano, the director of the Yamato Bunkakan Museum in Nara Prefecture.

Asano says "Snow in Fukagawa" represents the peak of Utamaro's artistic powers. He adds that this is an important work in the history of Japanese ukiyoe paintings and its rediscovery is a significant event in the history of Japanese art.

"Snow in Fukagawa" will be on display at the Okada Museum of Art in Hakone, south of Tokyo, from April 4th to the end of June.

resurfaceは読んで字のごとしで、「再び+表面に出る」ですが、「一度いなくなった後に再び現れる」という意味合いがあるのですね。潜水艦関係で用いられるのことがありますが、納得です。(Ume)
