TPP ministerial talks end without agreement

Ministerial talks among 12 nations that are negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade pact have ended without a broad agreement.



Trade ministers taking part in the 4-day talks in Singapore issued a joint statement on Tuesday.

The statement said that while some issues remain, they have charted a path forward to resolve them and produce comprehensive and balanced results.

It promised continued negotiations toward an ambitious agreement on market access as a whole, including tariff removal.



But the statement did not set a date for the next round of talks, saying only that negotiators will seek a deal as soon as possible.



Observers say differences between Japan and the United States over farm products were an obstacle to the broad accord Japan had aimed for.

Japan's minister of TPP negotiations Akira Amari said other ministers noted the importance of an agreement between Japan and the US, given how heavily the 2 economies will weigh in TPP trade.

He stressed that Japan has been making efforts toward a deal.

But some Japanese government officials say an early deal may be difficult because the US is expected to toughen its negotiating stance as the congressional mid-term elections approach.
