米MLB ニューヨークヤンキースのアレックス・ロドリゲス選手のdoping疑惑に裁定が降りました。
sidelineはスポーツでおなじみだと思いますが（英語は複数形）、動詞の方のsidelineは「ラインのサイド（外）に出す」という発想で「（負傷・事故・犯罪などで〉〈選手を〉出場できなくする」という意味になります。Websterにもまったく同じ"to prevent (a player) from playing in a game especially because of injury, illness, etc."とありますが、preventが用いられているところから強いニュアンスをくみ取ることができます。（UG）
Alex Rodriguez Is Banned From Baseball for One Season
The arbitrator hearing Alex Rodriguez’s appeal of his 211-game doping suspension upheld most of the punishment on Saturday, sidelining him for 162 games, all of next season and the postseason.
The announcement, by Fredric Horowitz, Major League Baseball’s chief arbitrator, means Rodriguez will not be eligible to return until the 2015 season.
