‘Hi, I Am Caroline Kennedy:’ A New Era for U.S.-Japan Relations

For nearly nine months, le tout Tokyo has eagerly awaited the arrival of a new U.S. ambassador with fame, glamour and a near-royal status. Finally, she stepped out of the shroud of bureaucratic secrecy and political logjam to introduce herself to the people of her new host country.

Hours after being sworn in as the first female ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy, daughter of the late President John F. Kennedy, appeared in a video posted on the web site of the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo Wednesday.

“Hi, I am Caroline Kennedy,” she started her message with the quintessential American greeting, Japanese subtitles translating her greeting. “I‘m deeply honored that President  Obama has asked me to serve as the United States Ambassador to Japan.” The 55-year-old newly-minted diplomat described herself as “an author, educator and attorney” and a mother of three children, as she spoke from the living room of her home in New York City.

The two-minute video went out two days before she assumes her post in Tokyo on Friday. The news of her imminent arrival was reported prominently on the web sites of Japan’s top newspapers as soon it was made public Wednesday.  The likely appointment of Ms. Kennedy was first reported in Japan in February, but her Senate confirmation didn’t take place until October because of a long vetting process and political stalemate in Washington.

(UG)
