genteel coaches

Jaguarが発表したF-TypeのニューモデルはJaguarらしいsportyな仕上がりとなっています。記事はthe New York Timesからの引用です。
今回採り上げるのはgenteel coachesという表現。coachというと「（競技者チームなどの）コーチ, 技術指導者」（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』小学館）という意味が想起されますが，その他にも様々な意味を持つ多義語です。
以前にも本ブログで「｟米国用法｠乗合バス；｟英国用法｠大型長距離バス；ハウストレーラー」や「（箱型で屋根両ドアつきの）大型四輪馬車；駅馬車(stagecoach)」という意味が採り上げられています（『プログレッシブ英和中辞典』同上）。そしてここに今回の「｟米国用法｠2ドアセダン」という意味も加えられます。
以上から，genteel coachesは「（扱いやすい）靜かな２ドアセダン」という意味で解釈できます。これまで経営不振を何とか乗り越えて今現在に至るJaguarですが，このF-Typeで過去の栄光を取り戻すことができるのでしょうか。（Koyamamoto）

… Also, like every new Jaguar, the F-Type looks and sounds nothing like the genteel coaches that have come to characterize the brand, especially after it moved away from racing and sports cars like the E-Type, the F-Type’s classic predecessor of 1961-74.
