学生は関心がないと思いますが、歌手の島倉千代子さんが本日、肝臓がんのため亡くなりました。
おなじみのenduring（"continuing for a very long time"--Longman）ですが、ここでは「息の長い」あたりの日本語がピタリときます（cf. the enduring appeal of Shakespeare's plays--ibid.）。
赤ん坊の頃、母に連れて行かれた（子守がいなかったので）人生はじめてのコンサート（当時はそんな言い方はしていなかったはず）が、彼女の歌謡ショーだったとあとで聞いたことがあります。記憶にはありませんが、島倉さんの歌声を聞くとどこか深いところから包まれるような感覚を覚えるのはそのせいなのでしょう。ご冥福をお祈りします。（UG）
Veteran Japanese singer Shimakura dies at 75
Chiyoko Shimakura, known as one of Japan's most enduring postwar singers, died of liver cancer at a Tokyo hospital Friday, her record label said. She was 75.
The singer of Japanese songs and "enka" ballads had numerous hits in her career spanning 58 years such as "Jinsei Iroiro" (Such is Life) and "Tokyo dayo Okkasan" (It's Tokyo, Mother).
Shimakura, who was from Tokyo, debuted in 1955 with the song, "Kono Yono Hana" (A flower of this World) after winning a contest as a high school student, and had since received several awards.
In 1999, she was among the recipients for that fall's Medal with Purple Ribbon for contributions to the arts and academia.
