pulling away from the pack in the last few miles

ニューヨークマラソンは厳戒体制の中でおこなわれ、男女ともケニア勢がその実力をいかんなく発揮しました。おなじみのPV pull away (from)は「 〔…より〕先に出る、〔…を〕引き離す 〔from〕」( "to move off or ahead"--Webster)という意味でしたね。ここでは「(終盤は)先頭集団を引き離し、独走態勢に〜」と訳せます。(UG)

Kenyans Take Women’s and Men’s New York Marathon Races

Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya, 32, the defending champion of the New York City Marathon in 2011, won the 2013 race on Sunday, pulling away from the pack in the last few miles. The 2012 race was canceled because of Hurricane Sandy.
Mutai won the men’s race in 2:08:24, or 4:55 minutes a mile. He had a lead of about a minute over the rest of the field.

In the women’s race, Priscah Jeptoo, 29, of Kenya, surged from behind to defeat Buzunesh Deba, who lives in New York. She trailed Deba by nearly 3.5 minutes at the halfway point, and started making her move as the race entered Manhattan. She passed Deba with just more than 2 miles to go.
Jeptoo’s time was 2:25:07, at an overall pace of 5:33 a mile.
