昨日と同じニュース中から表現を見てみます。

gripと聞きますと「しっかりつかむ」（『ジーニアス英和辞典　第３版』大修館）でお馴染みの表現だと思いますが「＜物・事・人が＞＜人・注意など＞を引きつけてそらさない」（ibid）の他にも「＜痛み・恐怖などが＞＜人・国など＞を捕らえて離さない」（ibid）という定義もありますので併せておさえておこうと思います。 cf.grip - 田邉祐司ゼミ 常時英心：言葉の森から (Shou-VR*)

UN votes to eliminate Syria weapons
The United Nations Security Council voted unanimously to secure and destroy Syria's chemical weapons stockpile, in a landmark decision aimed at taking poison gas off the battlefield in the escalating conflict.

The vote, after two weeks of intense negotiations, marked a major breakthrough in the paralysis that has gripped the council since the Syrian uprising began. Russia and China previously vetoed three Western-backed resolutions pressuring President Bashar Assad's regime to end the violence.
