ケニアで起きているショッピングモールの襲撃事件ですが、ケニア政府は「制圧した」と事件解決を宣言しましたが、イスラム過激派側がこれに反論して、果たして本当に解決したのかどうかピンとはこない状況が続いています。この事件の背景には根深い民族対立があるようです。

Nairobi attackers may have included Americans

Kenya's foreign minister says some of the militants who attacked a shopping mall in Nairobi over the weekend came from the United States. 

Kenyan security forces are continuing their sweep of an upscale Nairobi shopping mall that had been seized by armed militants. A large number of armed police officers were still on high alert around the Nairobi shopping mall Tuesday morning.

The attackers -- believed to be members of the Islamist group al Shabab from neighboring Somalia -- stormed the mall and took hostages on Saturday.

The attack killed at least 62 people.

Foreign Minister Amina Mohamed told the US broadcaster PBS and other media that the attackers include 2 or 3 American men and one British woman. 

She said the Americans are of Somali or Arab descent and grew up in Minnesota and Missouri.



US authorities are trying to confirm the information.

 White House deputy national security advisor Ben Rhodes said the US has been concerned about efforts by al Shabab to recruit Americans.

 The FBI says there are reports that more than 40 young people from Somali exile communities in Minnesota and other states have traveled to Somalia.



The British government says it is trying to confirm whether a British woman was also among the attackers.

 The British media say the woman may be the widow of one of the suicide bombers who attacked the London subway and bus systems in 2005. 

Reuters quoted a British security source as saying this is possible, but that there is nothing definitive or conclusive at this point.
