Japan’s best starter had a classic finishing moment to help clinch the first Pacific League title for the Tohoku Rakuten Eagles.
Masahiro Tanaka has won a Nippon Pro Baseball-record 26 consecutive decisions, 22 this season, and he emerged from the bullpen in the ninth inning on Thursday night with the knowledge that his Eagles could secure their first league title. The 24-year-old struck out the final two Saitama Seibu Lions with the go-ahead runners in scoring position to preserve a 4-3 victory at Seibu Dome that put made the Eagles the kings of the PL in their ninth year of existence.
The victory over the third-place Lions gives the Eagles a chance to spread their wings in the postseason.
