National Zoo panda Mei Xiang delivers again

今回気になったのは、in-uteroという表現です。これは「子宮内で、生まれる以前に」という意味を表します。（『ウィズダム英和辞典　第３版』三省堂）ここから「子宮」は“utero”と表すのかと考えたのですが、違いました。「子宮」のことは“womb”、または“utero”ではなく“uterus”と表現します。（『ジーニアス和英辞典　第２版』）
英英にはuterusは次のように定義されていました。“the womb (as a bodily organ, especially in medical and technical contexts).”（Oxford Dictionary Online）つまり、uterusはwombに比べ、医学や専門の場面で使われることが多いのですね。
また、“uterus”の複数形は“uteri”であることも併せておさえておきたいと思います。（Jakie）
