今回は、genetically engineeredという箇所に注目してみたいと思います。アメリカに来て、遺伝子組み換えを意味するGM(Genetically Modified)という言葉をしばしば目にしますが、調べてみると、遺伝子組み換えを表す表現パターンはいくつかあるようで、genetically engineered ［altered, manipulated, modified]「《be 〜》遺伝子組み換えが行われている、遺伝子操作されている、遺伝子工学の産物である」(英辞郎 on the WEB)と言ったような表現パターンが定義されています。本文ではgenetically engineered、genetically modifiedという表現が使用されています。
ここで気になったのが、engineeredという部分です。engineerといえば、日本でも使われている様に「エンジニア，技術者，技師」(『ウィズダム英和辞典 第二版』)という意味がありますが、辞書を引いてみると「<遺伝子>を操作する」(ibid)という意味もあることがわかりました。(Astroriver)
