Japanese Politicians Suffer Relapse of Foot-In-Mouth
Barely a month after Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto learnt a painful lesson about the importance of public figures watching their mouths after declaring that women forced to serve as prostitutes for Japan’s military had been “vital” to the war effort, ruling-party policy chief Sanae Takaichi appears not to have got the memo.
While reciting the Liberal Democratic Party line about the need to restart Japan’s nuclear reactors, Ms. Takaichi said in a speech Monday there had been “no deaths” as a result of the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident.
“We have no choice but to assure their utmost safety and utilize (the reactors),” she added, according to Japanese media.
While it is true there have been no known deaths directly attributed to radiation exposure from the Fukushima plant, such comments from pro-nuclear members of the government downplaying the human suffering from the accident are intolerable to many Fukushima residents who lost homes and livelihoods.
