Cobb was taken off the field on a stretcher after he was hit on the right ear by a liner off the bat of Kansas City's Eric Hosmer in the fifth inning of the Rays' 5-3 win over the Royals on Saturday.
今回は、タイトルから表現を拾いたいと思います。line driveという表現ですが、「【野球】ライナー」(『ウィズダム英和辞典 第二版』三省堂) という意味になります。本文の記事中にもあるのですが、日本の野球でいう「ライナー」は英語でも同じように"liner"を使うこともあれば、英語ではline driveという表現もあるのですね。英英の辞書でも調べてみると、"a batted baseball hit in a nearly straight line usually not far above the ground"(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)と定義されています。
記事に動画も載っていたのですが、反応できないスピードで向かってくるボールが投手に直撃する様は、かなり恐ろしいものですね。(Astroriver)
