　反政府デモが続くトルコのエルドアン首相は９日、首都アンカラや南部のアダナで支持者を前に「忍耐にも限界がある」と演説し、強気の姿勢を貫きました。しかし、治安部隊がデモ鎮圧のため強硬手段に出た事が国外からも批判を浴び、首相と与党公正発展党(AKP)はかつてない難局に直面しています。これからの成り行きによっては、トルコ悲願の欧州連合(EU)加盟やオリンピック招致活動に深刻な影響を与える事が必至な情勢となりそうです。トルコが真の民主主義国家になり得るのかどうか、今回の出来事はその試金石となるのかもしれませんね。

　さて、前置きが長くなりましたが、このentryでは下記の赤字epicenterを取り上げます。記事では「〈格式〉中心，中核」という意味で用いられていますが(『ルミナス英和辞典』第2版，研究社)、これはcenterとどの様な違いがあるのだろうかと思い、調べてみました。すると、Oxford Dictionary of Englishのepicentre（US epicenter）の項目では、“the central point of something, typically a difficult or unpleasant situation”と定義され、さらにその語源として“late 19th cent.: from Greek epikentros ‘situated on a centre’, from epi ‘upon’ ＋ kentron ‘centre’”とありました。（Phantom）

Turkish PM warns protesters his patience 'has limit'

ANKARA —Turkey’s defiant Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday told supporters his patience “has a limit” as police fired tear gas and jets of water at demonstrators in unrelenting protests against his government’s decade-long rule.

As tens of thousands held noisy demos in Istanbul, the capital Ankara and the western city of Izmir, Erdogan went on the offensive, firing up loyalists of his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) with rallies of his own across three cities.

The government insisted Saturday that the protests were “under control”, but hours later some of the largest crowds yet packed Istanbul’s Taksim Square, the epicenter of the demos, with people peacefully singing and dancing through the night.

Taksim, which has seen no police presence since officers pulled out last weekend, was again teeming with people on Sunday, many chanting: “Erdogan, resign!”
