Philip spends third day in hospital

The Duke of Edinburgh remains in hospital for a third day and is said to be "progressing satisfactorily" as he recovers following exploratory abdominal surgery.

exploratoryには「（（正式））探索の（ための）、調査の」（『ジーニアス英和辞典　第３版』大修館）という意味がありますが、文中では医学用語で「（（医））診査[探査]の」（『リーダーズ英和　第２版』研究社）という意味になります。Collins English Dictionaryも確認のため当たってみると’ (of surgery, an operation, etc) conducted for diagnostic purposes’と定義されていました。
