今回扱うのはMemorial Dayです。Memorial Dayとは「《米》戦没者追悼記念日」のことです。（『ウィズダム英和辞典　第３版』三省堂）これは多くの州で５月最後の月曜日とされています。（ibid）Wikipediaで調べてみると、次のようにありました。”Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War.”　ここから、Memorial Dayが以前はDecoration Dayと呼ばれていたことがわかります。また、これはアメリカの南北戦争で亡くなった兵士達を追悼するために始まったもののようです。
