ゲフィン氏は彼が手がけた『キャッツ』は、他に手がけたどの映画よりも儲かったと説得し、『ザ・プロデューサーズ』がit was worth the hassleであると納得させようとしました。ここでは、it was worth the hassleに注目します。よく似た表現にit's more hassle than it's worth「骨折り損のくたびれ儲け」があり、インターネットで検索してみるとtassel is the worth the hassle「今、辛いことを耐えれば後に良いことがあるよ！(日本語が思い浮かびません)」と言うがあります(同名の書籍があるようです)。これらから推測すると「契約など面倒なことをやっつけてしまえば、後で大金が手に入るぞ」という意味合いではないかと考えられます。だから、コロンに続いてhe had made more money on the musical “Cats” than on any film he had ever madeと書かれているのだと思われます。

この後、メル・ブルックス監督はどうなったかは『ザ・プロデューサーズ』の脚本としてmade a packet、大金を得ました。(Othello)

Musicals are risky in real life, too. So when David Geffen, a showbiz mogul, approached Mr Brooks about turning his movie into a musical over a decade ago, Mr Brooks dragged his feet. Mr Geffen tried to convince him it was worth the hassle: he had made more money on the musical “Cats” than on any film he had ever made.
