先ほどの記事(a bed of roses - 田邉祐司ゼミ 常時英心：言葉の森から)からfollow-upいたします。

注目するのは、throw in the towelです。
以前に先輩が上げていましたが（http://d.hatena.ne.jp/A30/20120711/1342010029）意味は「負けを認める、降参する」とありました（『ジーニアス英和辞典』第四版、大修館）。
ODOでも調べたところ、(of boxers or their seconds) throw a towel (or sponge) into the ring as a token of defeatとありました。
