先日から何度もブログで登場しているボストン爆破事件ですが、逮捕された両親が息子は無実であると主張しています。

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his 26-year-old brother Tamerlan, are suspected of carrying out Monday's bombing, which killed three and injured over 150. Dzhokhar, 19, is in custody after a tense search last night, while his older brother was killed in a shootout with police the night before.

shootoutを取り上げます。手持ちの辞書にはこの形ではなく、代わりに、shoot-outという表現で載っていました。綴りからもなんとなく想像つきますが、文中では「銃撃戦」（『ジーニアス英和辞典　第３版』大修館）という意味になります。ODOでも調べてみると、 ‘a decisive gun battle’と定義されていました。　

尚、同じような定義で「（（略式））撃ち合いの対決」（『ジーニアス英和辞典　第３版』大修館）という記述がされていましたが、Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary, 11th Edition を参照したところ‘a shooting competition in overtime that is used to determine the winner of a game (as in soccer or hockey) tied at the end of regular play’とあり、これには遊びのニュアンスが含まれているので、きちんと区別をした上で、併せて覚えておこうと思います。
