私は洋楽が好きなのでBillboardのmusic chartsをたまに見るのですが、長い間ランキングの上位に食い込んでいる曲の一つに、Thrift Shopという曲があります。

今回は、Thrift Shopという曲名の意味を取り上げたいと思います。thriftの意味を知らなかったので、thrift shopとは一体どのようなお店なのだろうかと思い辞書を引いてみると、thriftに「(やや古・ほめて)質素, 節約」(『ウィズダム英和辞典 第二版』三省堂)という意味があり、thrift shop[store]という形で「〈米〉（慈善目的の, 主に衣類を扱う）中古品店(〈英〉charity shop)」(ibid)という意味がある事がわかりました。英英の辞書で調べてみても、"AmE a shop that sells used goods, especially clothes, often in order to get money for a charity"（LDOCE）と定義されていることから、「慈善目的、そして、主に衣類を扱う」という点をしっかりと抑えておきたいと思います。
また、thrift shopと併せて、second-hand store/shop etc"(=a shop that sells second-hand things)"(LDOCE)という表現も頭に入れておきたいと思います。(Astroriver)
