Flat-footed kids on rise in Fukushima
The number of children with flat feet at a nursery in Fukushima Prefecture has grown about 2.5-fold since the prefecture was hit by a nuclear crisis two years ago, according to a survey by the nursery.
"I believe the rise is linked to reductions in outdoor activities due to radiation scares after the incident," said Miyoko Sato, head of the nursery in Fukushima city, the prefectural capital.
The nursery, which has encouraged kids to play outside to help them grow strong since opening in 2003, photographs the feet of all its children to record their growth.
