Okayama ruling immediately invalidating election results carries strong message

A day after a March 25 ruling in the Hiroshima High Court that invalidated the results of last year's House of Representatives election in two Hiroshima constituencies with a grace period, the court's Okayama branch has also declared the outcome of the election invalid -- effective immediately. The latest ruling sends a strong message to the Diet, which has failed to amend the current situation in which votes in some constituencies carry far more weight than votes in others due to population differences.

The two verdicts add a touch of reality to the possibility that the Supreme Court could consider invalidating the election outcome in a ruling expected as early as this year. Experts say the two rulings could be seen as additional pressure dissolve the lower house.

Masahito Tadano, a professor at Hitotsubashi University whose research fields include constitutional law, suggested that the ruling could spread past Hiroshima to all 300 single-seat constituencies in the nation.
