China's first lady in diplomatic debut

China's first lady is drawing attention as she accompanies her husband Xi Jinping on his first foreign visit as Chinese President.

 Peng Liyuan is a popular singer in China. She heads the army's song and dance troupe and also holds the rank of major general.

Peng was clad in a black suit as she descended arm-in-arm with Xi from their plane after arriving in Moscow on Friday.

She was welcomed with flowers by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin and was shown around the palace by Putin's wife Lyudmila.

On the next day, she attended a speech Xi gave at a university in Moscow and also visited a children's institution in the Russian capital.



Peng also visited a Russian military troupe. She said music knows no borders and called for deeper cultural exchanges between the 2 countries.

The Chinese first lady is drawing attention for cutting a different profile than the wives of previous Chinese leaders. The Chinese government may be hoping that she can help present a softer image of China on the international stage.

 But coverage of Peng's activities in Russia was mostly restricted to China's state media. This could mean the Chinese government wanted to avoid media coverage that focused more on Peng than on President Xi.
