championと聞くと、私の場合は名詞の「（競技の）優勝者」を思い浮かべたのですが、ここでは他動詞で、「＜主義など＞を擁護する、・・・のために戦う」（『ジーニアス英和辞典　第３版』大修館）という意味になります。LDOCEでも調べてみると、’ to publicly fight for and defend an aim or principle, such as the rights of a group of people’と定義されていました。(Shou-VR*)
