免許をとろう」というキャッチコピーのもと、放送されている『ドラえもん』の20年後を描いたCMはみなさんもご覧になった事があるでしょうか。個人的にはとても好きなCMなのですが、Japan TodayでもそのCMについて取り上げられています。

If Toyota announced they were introducing a pink car in the U.S. in the hopes of attracting more female customers, they would be the laughing stock of the business world, and every news program in the country would be asking how they could be that out of touch with society. In Japan, no problem. LOL.

今回はそのコメント欄に載っていた英語表現に注目します。laughing stockは「もの笑いの種、笑い草[者]」という意味(『新英和中辞典』研究社)ですね。LDOCEでは"American　English[countable] someone who is a laughing stock has done something so silly that people have no respect for them"と定義されているので米英語であることがわかります。よって赤文字を含めた一文を訳すと「ビジネスの世界で笑いものになってしまうだろう」となります。復習程度の表現ですが、自身の復習の意味も込めて取り上げてみました。(EnDough)
