WBC日本代表は昨日もやってくれました。山本監督が言う通り、2回の大量得点以降にしばらく点を取れていなかったのは気になります。

Japan ends second round with win over the Netherlands

Japan and the Netherlands didn’t play a full nine innings in their first meeting, a game that was called after seven due to the World Baseball Classic’s mercy rule.

On Tuesday, Samurai Japan gave the Dutch a taste of what had been in store for them in those two lost innings.

Japan captain Shinnosuke Abe homered both times he stepped to the plate in an eight-run second, Hisayoshi Chono drove in five runs, and the Japanese staved off a late rally to end the second round on a high note with a 10-6 win over the Netherlands in front of a crowd of 30,301 in the Pool 1 finale at Tokyo Dome.

“We scored eight in the second inning, but we couldn’t score later on,” Japan manager Koji Yamamoto said. “That’s why the game became tough. Although we had a big inning early, we should’ve scored more.”

思えば、初戦はコールドゲームでした。called gameも英語のようです。MLBのホームページに"A CALLED GAME is one in which, for any reason, the umpire in chief terminates play."（主審が自由に試合を終わらせる）と定義されています。(Official Rules | MLB.com)

記事のなかのmercy gameも気になります。もちろんこれも「コールドゲーム」を意味します。mercyはご存知のとおり「［…に対する］慈悲」や「救済」（『ジーニアス英和辞典　第４版』大修館）などの意味があります。これは点差が離れて負けている相手に対する「慈悲」を表しているのでしょうか。つまり、「雨天によるコールド」には使わないような気がしました。(Minnesota)
