Japanese electronics makers playing catch-up in tablet market

Japan's electronics companies have begun pumping out tablet computers in a desperate game of catch-up with foreign firms, including iPad maker and tablet sector goliath Apple Corp., which holds a substantial market share lead even in Japan. However, it's not just with established giants like Apple or Samsung that Japanese firms will have to contend with, but a host of new foreign entries into the tablet business including Microsoft.

One Japanese company joining the fray is Sony Corp., and Sony Mobile Communications President Kunimasa Suzuki told reporters on March 4 that his firm's offering "gives consumers a new, signature Sony experience." He was speaking of the Xperia Tablet Z, set to hit shelves on April 13 and equipped with new features, including one that allows the user to stream images on the screen to a compatible Sony TV just by putting the tablet in front of it.
