Yankees' Ichiro says he's fine after traffic crash
He was on his way home after Saturday's spring training game against the Detroit Tigers when the accident occurred a few miles from Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. He said on Sunday that his SUV was totaled in the accident.
今回取り上げる単語はtotalです。日本でも「合計」という意味で良く知られている英語ですが、ここでは別の意味の様です。辞書で調べてみると、「〈米・くだけて〉(乗り物)をぽんこつにする,おしゃかにする」（『ウィズダム英和辞典 第二版』三省堂）という意味が定義されていました。「廃車にする」という事ですね。また、(LDOCE)には"to damage a car so badly that it cannot be repaired"と定義されています。
ちょっと車をぶつけたどころの事故ではないようですが、イチロー選手に怪我は無いようで安心です。（Astroriver）
